This was said by Onaiyekan when he was discussing the importance of decentralizing power and making the states more efficient instead than seeking a constitutional revision.
In a notable development, the House of Representatives established a committee to review the 1999 constitution on February 26, 2024, according to the IBOMLEAKNEWS.
At its formation, the group stipulated that the exercise would end in 24 months.
Restructuring, however, was highlighted by Onaiyekan during a “policy dialogue on new governance structure for Nigeria” held on Friday by the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought in Abuja. He said this while addressing the present problems confronting Nigeria.
Additionally, he clarified that the current constitution does not recognize religion involvement in nation-building.
“Concerning the relationship between religion and the nation, the current constitution is contradictory and full of inconsistencies, regardless of whether it has been altered or not.
Because of this, it is imperative that we revisit the matter. Consequently, perhaps it would be wise to consider switching to a parliamentary system.
“Maybe we ought to inquire of the troops who substituted the presidential system for the parliamentary system: What were the motivations behind their decision?”
The Catholic priest George Ehusani spoke to the conversation by saying that no amount of well-thought-out plans for government will save a country that has bad leadership.
“No matter how ideal their political structure and governance blueprint is, I am more convinced than ever before that corrupt leadership and elite stupidity will bring down any nation,” he declared.
