Posted by In an effort to reduce crime, the Coalition of Southeast Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has urged governors around the area to set up closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in key locations.
Coalition President General Goodluck Ibem made this announcement in a Monday statement.
Ibem claims that the cameras will help law enforcement identify and apprehend those responsible for the region’s current state of anarchy.
He pointed out that if there had been closed-circuit television cameras, the perpetrators of the attack last week on a military checkpoint in Aba, Abia State, which killed around five troops, might have been quickly identified and captured.
He bemoaned the fact that, in relation to the tragic killing of the five troops, certain security personnel have started randomly arresting people.
Embracing new technologies to safeguard lives and assets should be our top priority in this 21st century, according to the statement.
It is completely unacceptable for security officers to conduct widespread arrests of individuals just to collect evidence of a crime.
The technique has resulted in the wrongful arrest and torture of innocent individuals.
“In light of this, we are urging Governor Otti and the other governors of the South East to immediately install CCTV cameras to aid security agencies in carrying out their legitimate responsibilities.”
