Posted by The interim chairmen of the 23 local government councils in Benue State were granted additional six months of term by the state’s House of Assembly on Tuesday.
This was in response to a letter that Governor Hyacinth Alia had addressed to the House, which Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh had read out during plenary.
The present caretaker chairmen’s term is set to end on June 5, 2024, according to the letter.
The letter states that the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) will have sufficient time to prepare for and administer the local government council elections if the caretaker chairmen’s tenures are extended.
The current administration in Benue State suspended the democratically elected council chairmen of the deposed Peoples Democratic Party government, and ever since then, according to IBOMLEAKNEWS, there has been no democratic framework at the third tier of government.
While some chairmen were dismissed, others had their term extended.
In order to be considered for screening and confirmation, the Assembly needs the resumes of the interim caretaker chairmen who have been nominated by Thursday.
