SALAH DAY! Islamic group attacks Akwa Ibom govt for fixing exams

An Islamic group has described the government of Akwa Ibom State as “insensitive and intolerant” for going ahead with examinations for school children on a Salah day.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) said on Tuesday the government’s decision was a display of arrogance, given that the federal government had declared 20 and 21 July 2021, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

IBOM LEAK NEWS understands that secondary schools across the 31 local government areas are winding down promotion examinations for students in Senior Secondary School II. The exams will come to an end on Thursday ahead of school’s closing on Friday, with students taking Accounting and Christian Religious Studies today.

Sources told THE PRESS the state government didn’t want to alter the already laid-out plan so as not to disrupt the academic calendar, hence the decision to proceed with the timetable.

But Prof Ishaq Akintola, MURIC director and founder said in a statement there is a large percentage of Muslim students who are both indigenes and non-indigenes in the Christian dominated state.

“We are shocked to our marrows at the level of acrobatic religiosity which some state governments are manifesting towards Muslims.

“The government of Akwa Ibom State is fully aware that there is a remarkable percentage of Muslim population made up of both indigenes and non-indigenes in the state. The children of these Muslims are in Akwa Ibom schools.

“The fact that the state’s Ministry of Education ignored these people and insisted on continuing examinations on Salah days prove that it is not prepared to coexist with any other religion.

“MURIC also sees it as impunity of the highest order for Akwa Ibom to ignore Federal Government declaration public holidays and to insist on holding examinations. This is Bohemian, arrogant, insensitive and intolerant,” the group said.
